Research - Analysis of Other Students Work

Analysis of Other Students Work
In this section, I will be analysing the work of two previous students who have done the task of creating the opening sequence for a thriller before.

TORN - A Grade (56 Marks)

Strengths: The sequence opens with a pan as the audience sees a house. This creates a sense of mystery right at the beginning of the sequence
Shots of a doll have been inserted into the shot when a man is coming out of the house. This is a strength because it creates questions in the audience's mind about what is going on in this film.
The titles that appear on the screen do not obscure the view of the action that is unfolding in each shot.
The narrative of the film is unusual. It is decieving the audience at the start when it appears calm and normal. It is only when we follow the man into the garage that we discover how sinister his character is.
The dialogue used at the end shows the audience that the main character looks like an average man but has a sinister side to him.
Weaknesses: The narrative of the film only becomes clear halfway through when the main character moves into the garage. This could be seen as confusing to some audiences.
There are times when the shots jump too quickly to the next so it can be sometimes difficult for the audience to give up with the narrative of the film.

Ring of Trees - E Grade (25 Marks)

Strengths: There are establishing shots at the beginning that show the audience where the opening sequence is set.
There is a forward tracking shot as we approach a classroom. This shows us the characters for the first time as they are sat in the classroom.
The shot fades out slowly and then another shot is picked up.
The titles that are used in this film have a font which suggests that the film has sinister elements to it.
The camera that is filming the shots is steady so makes the film look professional and organised.
Weaknesses: The titles that appear at the start are very fast paced and they disappear before the audience have a proper chance to look at them.
When the titles of the people starring the film appear, only first names are used and not full names.
The shots are edited together very quickly so the audience do not have a chance to see what is properly going on in each of the shots.
The camera during some shots is very unsteady. This makes the film seem unprofessional and unorganised.
